Visit of the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, to Jordan

On January 13, the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, visited Jordan, where he was received by Jordanian King Abdullah II at a bilateral meeting and held talks with his Jordanian counterpart Mr. Ayman Safadi.

Le Drian discussed the major regional issues, particularly Syria and the consequences of the announcement of the withdrawal of the US from Syria, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian issue, on which we maintain close cooperation with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

These talks were also an opportunity for the minister to recall the strong attachment of France to the strategic partnership that binds France to Jordan. The fight against terrorism - in the first place Daesh - as well as the security of the Jordanian territory are at the heart of this partnership.

The minister also reiterated France's commitment to Jordan's resilience. The French minister said: This commitment, which we want ambitious and up to the challenges facing the Kingdom, revolves around two distinct objectives: support for the reception of refugees and long-term support for the Jordanian economy. It is for this reason that AFD has implemented a MoU of 900 million euros over the 2016-2018 period, and plans to maintain a similar level of intervention for the coming years.

As such, France is fully aware of the solidarity shown by Jordan and the Jordanian people, who host nearly 700,000 Syrian refugees registered with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

On the economic front, Jean-Yves Le Drian hailed the Jordanian reform efforts and discussed with his counterparts the preparation of the London Conference to be held in February. France fully supports this initiative.
