Government Signs Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination Project Contract

The Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination and Conveyance Project (National Carrier Project) took a significant step forward on Sunday with the signing of a landmark agreement between the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Meridiam-Suez investment alliance, marking the beginning of one of the region's most ambitious water infrastructure initiatives.

The Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract, signed in Amman, will lead to the creation of an advanced desalination plant that will produce 300 million cubic meters of drinking water annually using cutting-edge Reverse Osmosis technology.

The system will span 450 kilometers, running from the Gulf of Aqaba to Amman, and will feature state-of-the-art seawater intake systems, high-capacity pumping stations, and renewable energy infrastructure.

Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, who attended the signing ceremony, was joined by U.S. Ambassador Yael Lempert, underscoring the strategic collaboration that helped bring the project to life, including technical support from USAID.

Water and Irrigation Minister Raed Abu Al-Saud highlighted the project's transformative impact, noting that it will provide water to around 4 million people and represent a major shift in Jordan’s approach to water security.

The Meridiam-Suez consortium, represented by General Manager of Meridiam Jordan Jad Hreibe, will operate the facility for 26 years before transferring ownership to the Jordanian government.

This initiative is a key part of Jordan’s economic modernization plan and supports the country’s renewable energy goals, with 31 percent of the project's electricity needs set to come from sustainable sources by 2030.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan and Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani, further emphasizing the project’s national importance.

This mega-project stands as the largest infrastructure development in Jordan's history, aimed at tackling the nation’s severe water scarcity issues while safeguarding groundwater resources for future generations.
