NPC to Drill 145 Wells in Push for Energy Self-Sufficiency

Director-General of the National Petroleum Company (NPC), Mohammed Khasawneh, announced on Monday that the company's 2025–2030 strategic plan targets the drilling of 145 gas wells and aims to reach a daily production capacity of 418 million cubic feet of natural gas.

Speaking during a visit by the Lower House’s Energy and Mineral Resources Committee to NPC facilities, Khasawneh noted that the increased gas output would help reduce the national energy bill and contribute to achieving self-sufficiency in natural gas, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

He outlined three key pillars of the strategic plan:

  1. Accelerating production through the deployment of more drilling rigs and the expansion of the gas processing plant;

  2. Conducting technical and financial studies for the development of a gas pipeline; and

  3. Ensuring a stable consumer base for the produced gas to support long-term sustainability.

Khasawneh emphasized the significance of increasing output from the Risha gas field, especially in terms of supplying the industrial sector, which plays a crucial role in lowering national energy costs.

He also pointed to the recent progress at the Risha field, attributing the success to the efforts of NPC’s national workforce. He highlighted the field’s potential, the drilling equipment deployed, and the contributions made by local staff in advancing operations.

The committee, led by MP Haitham Ziadin, received a briefing on NPC’s current activities at the Risha field and its ongoing efforts in natural gas extraction.

Ziadin underlined the importance of leveraging Jordan’s mineral resources, particularly the Risha gas reserves, to support the national vision of relying on domestically produced gas, which he said would strengthen the Jordanian economy.

He added that expanding gas exploration at Risha would bring positive economic impacts, including lower production costs for industries, job creation, and benefits for citizens. Ziadin also reaffirmed the Lower House’s commitment to backing NPC’s mission and called for enhanced inter-agency cooperation to explore and develop Jordan’s natural and mineral resources.

The meeting also covered the company’s recent tender for the drilling of 80 wells over the next three years at Risha on a lump-sum turnkey (LSTK) basis, which aims to boost drilling efficiency and expand the field’s production capacity.
