The castle was originally a Roman fortress. It used to defend the oasis and the control of the invasion road by the Arab tribes. It was built one more time between 1217 and 1228. Then the Arabs settled in it. Lawrence of Arabia used it as his headquarters during the Great Arab Revolt.
